RIP – Dr. Michael DeBakey, the world-famous cardiovascular surgeon who pioneered such now-common procedures as bypass surgery and invented a host of devices to help heart patients, died Friday night at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, officials announced. He was 99.
He is truly one of the most influential doctors of our time.
Dr. DeBakey’s pioneering surgical procedures in bypassing blocked arteries in the neck, legs and heart have been performed on millions of patients around the world. By the time he stopped a regular surgical schedule, when he was in his 80s, he had performed more than 60,000 operations.
He was also instrumental in making Houston a major center for heart surgery and research and transforming Baylor into one of the nation’s great medical education and research institutions.
And he was a leader in developing mechanical devices to assist failing hearts. An early invention, the roller pump, devised while he was in medical school in the 1930s, became the central component of the heart-lung machine, which takes over the functions of the heart and lungs during surgery by supplying oxygenated blood to the brain. It helped inaugurate the era of open-heart surgery.
May he rest in peace.

On a lighter note, I hung out with Sam today.

Sam enjoying dimsum
I have known this chick since elementary. We don’t hang out often and when we do, you’ll find us eating, hitting the gym or glamoring up. Anyway, I always like little shindigs, or one on one activities — I don’t work well in crowds/big groups. It was especially nice catching up, chit chatting, and discussing our life goals.
I am especially happy for her and the journey she will embark on. Trust me, it is rare finding someone beaming with so much vivacity. This is a girl that has gone through so much in her life that she still remains positive and bright. It is the reason why I admire her, and especially one of the reasons why I consider her one of my nearest and dearest.
Back to dim sum! This was the second time I had dim sum. For someone that is a quarter Chinese, I’m not exactly a big fan of dim sum
. I am more accustomed to ‘Me quieu’ and cha quai bread, mainly because, my mom whenever she felt like celebrating would take my sister and I to a Khmer restaurant and order just that. Those times were rare, especially for us, since we were very, very poor (and still are).
Now we’re older. We have different tastes. My sister is on the east coast.
I still like ‘me quieu’.
Well back to my dim sum experience! I, for the first time tried chicken feet. Honestly, I don’t like it. It tastes like duck and I don’t like duck! Those chicken feet look like baby fingers!
That was quite an experience! Lucky Toro has a lot to munch on — he loves leftovers.
After dim sum, we ran some errands and then headed back to her place. It was there I was greeted by Lucky.
Aren’t they cute together in the pic to the right??
It is always nice to see how big Lucky and Mango are
. They’re my two favorite animals after Toro.
Later I ran my own personal errands. I stopped by Fresh & Easy and was amazed by the prices! It was WAY cheaper than Trader Joes!
I was however, very disappointed where they placed the $9.99 small orchids. These were beautiful orchids that were placed right under the AC!
Anyhow, what people don’t know about me is that I love to garden. My mom has a green thumb and that means inherently I do too
. Actually, one of our past times is gardening. Currently, my favorite plants are our habanero plant, Jasmine and Papaya. Pure, my orchid, I consider my pet, my love child!
Maybe tomorrow I will take pictures of our mini garden
. Ooh, I don’t want to forget, but here’s Pure, day 3!
